Flea Pest Control for Homes and Businesses

Fleas can spread quickly through carpets, rugs, furniture, floor gaps and pet resting areas. Although adult fleas are the most noticeable sign of an infestation, flea eggs, larvae and pupae can remain hidden throughout a property and continue developing.

Pest Ex provides professional flea pest control for homes, rental properties and businesses across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. Our technicians assess the affected parts of the property and apply targeted treatments to manage active adult fleas and developing flea stages.

Treating the property is particularly important because fleas do not remain only on pets. Eggs can fall into carpets, bedding, flooring gaps and furniture, allowing the infestation to continue even after the animal has been treated.

Pest Ex treats the affected building environment. Pet owners should speak with their veterinarian about an appropriate flea treatment for their cats, dogs or other animals so that pet care and property treatment can be coordinated.

Flea Identification: What Do Fleas Look Like?

Fleas are small, wingless parasites that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Adult fleas are usually between 1 mm and 3 mm long, making them difficult to see without looking closely.

Their bodies are generally reddish-brown or dark brown and flattened from side to side. This narrow shape allows fleas to move through animal fur, carpets and other confined spaces.

Fleas have six legs, including powerful hind legs that allow them to jump between hosts and nearby surfaces. They do not have wings.

Key flea characteristics include:

  • A small, narrow and flattened body
  • Reddish-brown or dark brown colouring
  • Six legs with enlarged hind legs
  • Fast jumping movements
  • Activity around pet bedding, carpets and upholstered furniture
  • Small black specks known as flea dirt

Adult fleas are often noticed when they jump onto a person’s socks, legs, clothing or furniture.

Flea Pest Control

Common Signs of a Flea Infestation

Fleas can be difficult to notice during the early stages of an infestation. In many cases, people first recognise changes in their pet’s behaviour or notice bites before seeing an adult flea.

Common signs of flea activity include:

  • Small, itchy bites around the ankles and lower legs
  • Pets scratching, biting or grooming themselves more frequently
  • Tiny black specks in pet bedding or animal fur
  • Small jumping insects on carpets, flooring or furniture
  • Fleas jumping onto socks or clothing
  • Increased irritation or restlessness in pets
  • Flea activity appearing after a property has been vacant
  • Fleas continuing to appear after only the pet has been treated

A property can experience flea activity even when no pets currently live there. Fleas may have been left by previous occupants, introduced by visiting animals or carried into the property by rodents or wildlife.

Professional flea pest control may be required when flea activity is widespread, continues after cleaning or repeatedly returns.

Flea Behavior, Diet & Habitat

Fleas are ectoparasites, meaning they feed on the blood of mammals and birds. They rely on their strong hind legs to jump from one host to another, quickly propelling into the animal’s fur to avoid being scratched by the host’s claws. The life cycle of a flea begins when a female flea lays eggs on the host. A single female can lay up to 20 batches of eggs, which hatch in about two weeks. This rapid breeding process makes flea control essential for long-term eradication.

Why Fleas Can Be Difficult to Manage

Many flea infestations continue because only the visible adult fleas are addressed. A much larger portion of the flea population may remain hidden as eggs, larvae or pupae.

These developing flea stages can be found in:

  • Carpets and rugs
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Pet bedding
  • Flooring edges
  • Cracks and crevices
  • Areas beneath furniture
  • Shaded outdoor resting areas
  • Kennels and animal sleeping areas

Flea pupae are enclosed inside cocoons, which can make this stage more difficult to reach with direct treatment. Adult fleas may therefore continue emerging for a period after the property has been treated.

Successful flea management usually requires coordinated property treatment, cleaning and veterinarian-recommended flea care for pets.

Our Professional Flea Treatment Process

Effective flea pest control involves more than treating the adult fleas that are currently visible. Pest Ex uses a targeted treatment approach based on the extent of the activity, the property layout and the areas where fleas are likely to be developing.

Property Inspection and Assessment

The technician discusses where flea activity has been noticed and assesses the affected areas of the property.

Particular attention may be given to:

  • Pet sleeping and resting areas
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Flooring edges
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Cracks and sheltered spaces
  • Kennels and outdoor animal areas
  • Rooms where bites or jumping fleas have been reported

The inspection helps the technician determine the most appropriate treatment approach for the property.

Targeted Flea Treatment

Treatment may be applied to affected internal areas such as carpets, floor edges, cracks, rugs and other likely flea harbourage locations.

External treatment may also be considered when flea activity is associated with kennels, shaded areas, animal resting places or other suitable outdoor environments.

The exact products and treatment areas will depend on the property, the level of flea activity and the technician’s assessment.

Insect Growth Regulator Treatment

An insect growth regulator, commonly referred to as an IGR, may be used to interfere with the development of immature fleas.

This helps manage the flea life cycle by affecting developing stages rather than focusing only on the adult fleas that are immediately visible.

Adult Flea Treatment

An adulticide may be used to target active adult fleas within the treated areas.

Combining treatment for adult fleas with an insect growth regulator provides a more complete approach to managing different stages of the infestation.

Aftercare and Follow-Up Advice

After the service, the technician will explain:

  • When residents and pets can re-enter treated areas
  • When vacuuming should resume
  • Which surfaces should not be washed immediately
  • How pet bedding should be managed
  • Whether additional cleaning is required
  • When a follow-up assessment may be appropriate

Following these instructions is an important part of the treatment process.

How to Prepare Your Property for Flea Treatment

Preparing the property allows the technician to access areas where fleas, eggs and larvae may be present.

Before the appointment, customers may be asked to:

  • Vacuum carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture
  • Vacuum along skirting boards and flooring edges
  • Empty the vacuum cleaner outside the property
  • Wash pet bedding according to its care instructions
  • Remove clothing, toys and loose items from the floor
  • Move lightweight items away from wall edges
  • Remove or cover pet food and water bowls
  • Arrange for pets to be away from the treatment areas
  • Cover fish tanks and switch off air pumps when instructed
  • Mow or tidy affected outdoor areas where appropriate

Preparation requirements can vary according to the property and the selected treatment. Follow the specific instructions provided by Pest Ex when the appointment is confirmed.

How to Get Rid of Fleas

  • For Humans
If you’ve been bitten by a flea, it’s essential to avoid scratching the bite to prevent infection. Start by washing the bite area with antiseptic soap and apply antiseptic ointment to soothe the irritation. To reduce itching and swelling, use an ice pack on the affected areas. Calamine lotion can also provide relief by calming itching and reducing inflammation.
  • For Pets
Treating your pet is the first step in eliminating fleas. Use flea shampoos, medicated flea collars, flea tablets, and flea repellent powders to manage the flea population on your pet. Regular flea treatments are necessary to keep your pet flea-free and prevent the cycle from continuing. Professional flea pest control services can also treat your pets effectively to ensure full eradication.
  • For your Home
Fleas can be found not only on pets but also in your home. Frequent vacuuming of carpets, pet beds, and furniture is essential. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately to avoid the possibility of flea eggs hatching. Clean pet kennels and bedding regularly to prevent re-infestation. Fleas can hide in cracks, crevices, and other difficult-to-reach areas, which is why professional treatment for your home is crucial.

How Fleas Are Treated

Fleas require a comprehensive treatment approach to tackle every stage of their life cycle. Pest Ex uses a combination of treatments to ensure complete eradication:

  1. Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) – This substance disrupts fleas’ hormonal balance and prevents them from maturing into adults, addressing eggs, larvae, and pupae to stop future infestations.

  2. Adulticide – After applying the IGR, an adulticide is used to kill adult fleas quickly and effectively. This treatment eliminates any remaining adult fleas, ensuring no live fleas are left behind.

While it’s important to treat your pet, it’s equally crucial to treat your home. Fleas often lay eggs in carpets, bedding, and furniture, which allows the infestation to continue even after treatment. Pest Ex’s professional flea pest control services target all potential hiding spots, using specialised equipment to ensure your home is completely flea-free.

After treating your pet, Pest-Ex will then apply a pesticide across all floor areas of your home. This treatment is safe for humans and pets but not on fleas. FAQ

Flea bites on humans and pets typically cause small, red, raised welts that are often itchy. They are usually concentrated in groups or lines around the ankles and lower legs. Flea bites can lead to irritation, swelling, and in some cases, more severe allergic reactions or infections if scratched. On pets, flea bites can also cause them to develop flea allergy dermatitis, leading to excessive itching, hair loss, and scabbing.

You may see a reduction in flea activity immediately after treatment, but full results can take up to 7–10 days as the residual treatment affects emerging fleas. Regular cleaning and following aftercare advice help speed up the process.

Getting rid of fleas often requires treatment of both pets and the home environment. Professional flea pest control can help target fleas at multiple life stages, including eggs, larvae and adults.

While there are over-the-counter flea treatments available, professional flea control is often the most effective way to fully eliminate fleas from your home. Fleas can be difficult to eradicate without addressing all stages of their life cycle, from eggs to adults. Pest Ex uses a combination of treatments, including insect growth regulators (IGRs) and adulticides, to ensure complete flea removal. Professional pest control services also treat your home’s environment, such as carpets, pet bedding, and furniture, to prevent reinfestation.

Regularly wash pet bedding, vacuum floors and furniture, and ensure your pets are on a vet-approved flea prevention plan. Our team can also recommend follow-up flea pest control strategies to keep your home flea-free.

Absolutely. At Pest-Ex, we use safe, low-toxicity products suitable for families and pets. We’ll provide clear instructions on re-entry times and post-treatment care to ensure everyone’s safety.
