Termite Treatment by Pest Ex Pest Management

How to get rid of termites is a task best left to the professionals, there are many different types of termites throughout Australia, and some respond differently to certain types of termite treatments. Termite colonies reproduce at a rate of approximately 3,000 eggs per day, for these reasons cheap DIY termite treatments don’t work. Over the past 15 years of treating termites, we have seen many failed attempts at getting rid of termites and below we will name a few real experiences.

Thermal Imaging - looking for termites

In 2020 a Gold Coast homeowner attempted at getting rid of termites using a DIY spray with an active ingredient (Bifenthrin) this product is a registered product for controlling termites, but the homeowner wasn’t aware the product was a repellant chemical they will kill the termites that were sprayed but not transfer to other termites. This resulted in about 300 termites being sprayed in garden, the 300 termites died within minutes and other termites in the ground detected the repellant product in the ground and avoided that area moving onto other food sources. 3 Months later Pest-Ex was called by this client with termites in the bathroom and a $13,000 termite damage repair bill.

What is the best way to get rid of termites? It will depend on these main factors:

  1. Have you had a proper termite inspection? A termite inspection is a detailed report and inspection that includes the internal, subfloor, external and roof void areas of the home. This is a major first step in identifying if your home has termites and after the termite inspection procedure will identify if the home has termites? Where they are? And what type of termites are present.
  2. There are over 300 types of termites in Australia and all of them respond slightly different to each other. You must know what type of termites you’re dealing with before any treatment is attempted. A good example is Coptotermes termites, these termites are common in Brisbane and the Gold Coast areas and cause major damage to homes. Getting rid of these termite colonies successfully in a home will usually require internal termite baiting. External treatment can usually consist of either a trelona termite baiting system or a termidor termite barrier.

Another example is Schedorhinotermes termites, these are also common in Gold Coast and Brisbane areas. Getting rid of these types of termites inside a building will usually be suited for a termidor foaming or dusting type treatment into a sealed wall cavity. This treatment is then rechecked 21-30 days later to confirm pest numbers within the dwelling and then the external termite management system can be installed by either a termidor termite barrier or a trelona termite baiting system.

Getting rid of termites inside a home is extremely crucial first before any form of external system is installed. If termites are not treated correctly inside a home before a termite perimeter treatment is done you will risk trapping the termites within the home. All termites then need is a moisture source and the termites continue to destroy the home.

How to get rid of termites in a wall of a home?

Termites in wall
Getting rid of termites in a wall of a home will consist of either termite baiting internally until colony control occurs (usually 3 months) or internal termite foaming treatment or termite dusting treatment using a non-repellant product.

Termites found in walls in this Brisbane home:

Stage 2 will be installation of a perimeter termite baiting system or termite barrier to protect the home from re-infestation.

How to get rid of termites in the garden:

Finding termites in your garden can be serious, before you treat termites in the garden its best to always have the home checked immediately. If the home is clear of termites its best to install a professional termite baiting system program. Just spraying termites with a product won’t get rid of termites in the garden long term.

How to get rid of termites in soil:

Getting rid of termites in the soil can consist of either baiting or chemical termite barrier using termidor. The main thing you must be aware of when finding termites in the soil is

  • Is the soil against the house? If so a termite inspection first is essential the consideration can be determined for a termite baiting system or termite barrier.
  • If the soil is far away from the home its important to understand the chances of termites being in other areas of soil is high (termites travel far distances underground) its always best to ensure your home is protected if termites are in soil within 50 meters from the home.

If termites are found in soil far from a home a spray treatment can be done to the affected area only saturating the affected soil area will treat the colony, but this type of treatment will not protect the home or control the colony.

How to get rid of termites in a stump?

Getting rid of termites in a tree stump will usually involve drilling the stump and injecting the stump base using termidor. The termites will pass through the treated base unknowingly encountering a lethal dose of termidor and the transfer effect will occur killing more nearby termites over the next 21 days after treatment. After the termite treatment has been done to the stump, the stump can be removed or ground down after 21-30 days after the treatment.

How to treat a termite colony

Termite colony in home

Treatment of a termite colony will in most cases involve

  • installation and professional management of a termite baiting system. These systems work so well because the termites naturally feed on the bait as it contains cellulose (their natural food source) termites aren’t aware the bait contains a chitlin synthesis inhibitor that stops the termite’s new exoskeleton growing. When termites feed on the bait they spread it throughout the colony, then when the colony molts the colony is treated as the bait spreads through the termites as a food source. The #1 termite baiting system installed and serviced by Pest-Ex is a trelona termite baiting program. Contact us for a free assessment and quote on this new and advanced system.
  • Installation of a termidor termite barrier around the entire home, this will consist of a trench being dug around the home soil areas down to the foundations, and application of termidor is applied at usually 10 liters per lineal meter. Tile or concrete areas are usually carefully drilled through and injected creating a continuous termite treated zone around the home lasting up to 8 years.

They took the time to investigate the cause, the source of the problem and elimnated it completely which included going through every cupboard, cracks hiding spots the lot.
