When the weather cools down, most people push pest control to the bottom of the to-do list. Termites feel like a summer problem, something to worry about once the humidity climbs and the swarmers start flying. That thinking is exactly what puts South East Queensland homes at risk. Termites do not disappear in winter, and the cooler months are one of the smartest windows to have your property checked. Here is why booking a termite inspection over winter works in your favour.

Termites Do Not Take a Winter Break in South East Queensland

In colder parts of the country, termite activity slows once temperatures drop. South East Queensland is different. Our subtropical climate keeps the soil warm enough for colonies to keep feeding right through winter, particularly the destructive species common to the region such as Coptotermes and Schedorhinotermes.

Because these termites work below ground and inside wall cavities where conditions stay stable, they often go unnoticed for months. A colony can quietly feed on the timber frame of your home all winter while you assume nothing is happening. Knowing the signs of termite activity helps, but by the time mud tubes or hollow-sounding timber appear, the damage is already underway. A professional inspection finds the problem while it is still small and far cheaper to deal with.

Catch a Problem Before the Spring Swarm

Spring is peak swarming season. As temperatures rise, mature colonies release winged reproductives that fly off to start new nests, which means one untreated colony in winter can become several separate problems by summer.

A winter inspection breaks that cycle. If activity is found now, it can be treated before the colony reaches the stage where it spreads. You are dealing with one known issue instead of chasing new outbreaks across your property a few months later. For prevention, winter really is the quiet before the storm, and the best time to get ahead of it rather than react to it.

Shorter Wait Times and Easier Booking

Demand for pest control drops over winter because people assume the threat has passed. That works in your favour. With fewer homeowners booking, appointments are easier to secure, wait times are shorter, and you have far more flexibility choosing a time that suits you.

Come spring and summer, when everyone notices ants marching across the kitchen and spiders settling into the eaves, the calendar fills quickly. Booking your termite inspection in winter means you are not stuck waiting during the busiest months of the year, and your annual protection stays on schedule instead of slipping into a peak-season backlog.
Winter Can Make Detection Easier

Cooler weather can help the inspection itself. When pests retreat into the warm, hidden parts of a house, their activity becomes more concentrated and easier to trace. Lower ambient temperatures also improve the contrast picked up by thermal imaging, because the heat and moisture given off by a live termite nest stand out more clearly against cooler surroundings.

At Pest-Ex, our technicians use Termatrac radar, thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to locate termites behind walls without cutting into them. These tools work year-round, but winter conditions play to their strengths, giving you a thorough, non-invasive result and a clear picture of what is happening inside your walls.

What Happens During a Professional Termite Inspection

A thorough inspection covers far more than a quick look around the yard. Our technicians work through the whole property, inside and out, checking the areas termites are most likely to travel through and feed on.

Inside, that means examining skirting boards, door frames, window architraves, cupboards and any accessible timber. If your home has a subfloor, we inspect underneath it, and we check the roof void where damage often hides out of sight. Outside, we look over fences, retaining walls, garden beds, tree stumps and stored timber for mud tubes, damaged wood and the moist conditions termites are drawn to.

A standard home usually takes one to two hours, though larger properties or homes with tricky access can take longer. High-moisture areas get extra attention, because an abnormal reading can point to either a plumbing leak or a live nest, and it matters a great deal which one you are dealing with. Once we have finished, you receive a detailed written report that sets out what we found, in plain language, with photos. Nothing is left for you to guess at.

Protect Your Biggest Asset Before the Rush

For most people, their home is the single largest thing they will ever own, and termite damage is rarely covered by home insurance. Repair bills after an untreated infestation can run into the tens of thousands, all from a pest most owners never see until it is too late. A yearly inspection is a small, simple step that protects that investment.

Most pest professionals recommend a termite inspection at least once every twelve months, and every six months for high-risk properties. If you shift your inspection routine to winter, you lock in a quiet, convenient time each year and head into the warmer months knowing your home is protected. The Gold Coast sits in a high-risk zone on the CSIRO termite map, so for local homeowners this is not a box-ticking exercise, it is basic protection.

Simple Ways to Reduce Termite Risk This Winter

An inspection tells you where you stand. A few habits around the home help keep the risk down between visits, and winter is a good time to sort them out.

Termites need moisture, so anything that keeps your home dry works against them. Fix leaking taps and pipes, clear blocked gutters, and make sure downpipes carry water away from the foundations rather than letting it pool alongside them. Keep firewood, timber offcuts and garden mulch away from external walls, since a stack of timber against the house is close to an open invitation. Improve subfloor ventilation where you can, trim back vegetation touching the walls, and avoid piling soil or raised garden beds up against the brickwork.

None of this replaces a professional inspection, and it will not stop a determined colony on its own. What it does is remove the easy conditions termites look for, and give your home a stronger first line of defence through the cooler months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are termites active in winter in Queensland?

Yes. South East Queensland’s mild, humid climate keeps termites feeding all year. They simply move deeper into warm, sheltered spots such as subfloors and wall cavities, so they become less visible in winter, not less active.

How often should I get a termite inspection?

Most professionals recommend regular termite inspections at least once every twelve months. For homes in high-risk areas, or properties with a history of termites, every six months is the safer interval.

How long does a termite inspection take?

A standard home usually takes one to two hours. The exact time depends on the size of the property, whether there is a subfloor to access, and whether any areas need closer investigation.

Does home insurance cover termite damage?

In most cases, no. Termite damage is generally excluded from home and contents policies because it is considered preventable through regular inspection and maintenance. That is a large part of why prevention matters so much.

Can I check for termites myself?

You can watch for warning signs such as mud tubes, hollow-sounding timber, discarded wings and paint that bubbles or cracks. The catch is that termites do most of their damage out of sight, and by the time the signs are obvious the colony is usually well established. Professional tools like thermal imaging and radar pick up activity long before it becomes visible.
