As temperatures begin to drop, many Australian homeowners notice an increase in unwanted visitors, not family or friends, but rats and mice. While rodents can be active throughout the year, winter often brings a noticeable rise in sightings inside homes, garages, sheds, and commercial buildings. The cooler weather encourages rodents to seek warmth, food, and shelter, making residential and business properties particularly attractive.

Understanding why rodent activity increases during winter can help property owners recognise early warning signs and take practical steps to minimise the risk of an infestation. In this guide, we’ll explain why rodents become more active during the colder months, where they typically hide, and when it’s time to consider professional rodent control.

Why Do Rodents Become More Active in Winter?

Winter changes the environment in ways that make indoor spaces far more appealing to rodents. Although rats and mice don’t hibernate, they must constantly search for places where they can stay warm, find food, and safely reproduce.

During the warmer months, rodents have easier access to natural food sources and outdoor nesting sites. As winter arrives, food becomes less abundant, temperatures fall, and harsh weather makes outdoor survival more difficult. As a result, rodents begin moving closer to homes, warehouses, restaurants, and commercial buildings where conditions are more favourable.

This seasonal movement is one of the main reasons pest control professionals often see an increase in rodent-related enquiries during winter.

Warm Shelter Becomes a Priority

Like all mammals, rodents need stable temperatures to survive. Cold weather increases the amount of energy they use to stay warm, so finding sheltered environments becomes essential.

Homes and commercial buildings provide numerous places where rodents can nest comfortably, including:

  • Roof voids
  • Ceiling cavities
  • Wall spaces
  • Under floorboards
  • Garages
  • Storage rooms
  • Sheds
  • Basements
  • Utility cupboards

These areas are often quiet, undisturbed, and close to food and water sources, making them ideal nesting locations.

Once rodents establish a nest, they may remain active throughout winter unless the infestation is addressed.

Food Is Harder to Find Outdoors

Natural food supplies become less reliable during winter. Seeds, fruits, insects, and other food sources may become scarce, forcing rodents to search elsewhere.

Residential properties often provide easy access to food through:

  • Kitchen cupboards
  • Pantry shelves
  • Pet food
  • Bird seed
  • Compost bins
  • Fruit trees
  • Rubbish bins
  • Outdoor dining areas

Even small crumbs, food scraps, or improperly stored dry goods can attract rodents.

Commercial properties such as restaurants, cafes, warehouses, supermarkets, and food processing facilities can be particularly attractive because food is often stored in larger quantities.

Rodents Can Enter Through Surprisingly Small Openings

One reason rodents become such persistent winter pests is their ability to squeeze through tiny gaps.

Mice can fit through openings as small as 6mm, while rats can enter through gaps around 20mm wide. Small cracks around doors, windows, pipes, vents, roof tiles, and utility lines can provide easy access.

Many property owners don’t realise these entry points exist until rodents have already moved inside.

Once indoors, rodents often follow wall cavities, roof spaces, and plumbing lines to reach food and nesting areas.

Winter Is an Ideal Time for Nest Building

Rodents constantly build nests using materials they find nearby.

Inside buildings, they commonly use:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Fabric
  • Insulation
  • Leaves
  • Soft plastics
  • Stored clothing

Roof spaces and wall cavities provide excellent protection from wind, rain, and predators.

Female rodents can continue breeding during winter if food and shelter remain available. A small rodent problem can therefore develop into a much larger infestation over a relatively short period.

Common Signs of Rodent Activity During Winter

Rodents are usually more active at night, so infestations often go unnoticed until the population grows.

Some of the most common warning signs include:

Droppings

Small dark droppings are often found near food storage areas, inside cupboards, under sinks, along skirting boards, or in roof spaces.

Fresh droppings are generally darker and softer, while older droppings become dry and crumbly.

Scratching Noises

Many homeowners first notice rodents by hearing scratching, gnawing, or scurrying sounds inside ceilings or walls after dark.

These noises often become more frequent during winter as rodents spend more time indoors.

Gnaw Marks

Rodents have continuously growing teeth and must gnaw regularly to keep them worn down.

You may notice chew marks on:

  • Timber
  • Electrical wiring
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Plastic containers
  • Food packaging
  • Furniture

Damaged electrical wiring can also increase the risk of electrical faults and fire hazards.

Nesting Materials

Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or cardboard found in hidden areas may indicate active nesting.

Nests are commonly built in roof voids, storage boxes, garages, and behind appliances.

Unusual Pet Behaviour

Dogs and cats often detect rodents before humans do.

If pets repeatedly focus on certain walls, cupboards, ceilings, or storage areas, it may be worth investigating further.

Why Winter Rodent Infestations Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Although rodents may seem like a minor nuisance at first, they can cause significant problems if left unchecked.

Rodents constantly chew to keep their teeth from overgrowing, which can damage wiring, insulation, timber, pipes, and stored belongings.

They can also contaminate food with droppings, urine, and hair, making food unsuitable for consumption.

As rodent populations grow, infestations become more difficult and time-consuming to manage.

Early action is generally more effective than waiting until signs become widespread.

How to Reduce the Risk of Rodents This Winter

While no property can be completely immune to rodents, several practical measures may help reduce the likelihood of attracting them.

Seal gaps around doors, windows, plumbing, and roof penetrations wherever possible.

Store food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs or food spills promptly.

Keep rubbish bins tightly closed and dispose of waste regularly.

Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and storage areas where rodents may establish nests.

Trim vegetation that provides easy access to roofs or external walls.

Arrange regular inspections if your property has experienced previous rodent activity or is located near bushland, waterways, agricultural land, or commercial food premises.

When Should You Call a Professional Rodent Control Service?

If you continue hearing scratching noises, find fresh droppings, notice chew marks, or repeatedly see rodents around your property, professional assistance may be required.

Rodents reproduce quickly, and what begins as a small problem can escalate into a larger infestation if left untreated.

A licensed rodent control professional can inspect the property, identify entry points, determine the extent of rodent activity, and recommend an appropriate treatment strategy based on your property’s specific circumstances.

Final Thoughts

Winter creates ideal conditions for rodents to move indoors in search of warmth, food, and shelter. Homes and businesses provide everything they need to survive the colder months, making seasonal increases in rodent activity a common issue across many parts of Australia.

Understanding why rodents become more active during winter and recognising the early signs of an infestation can help you respond before the problem grows. If you suspect rats or mice have moved into your property, arranging a professional inspection can help identify the source of the activity and provide an effective solution before the infestation becomes more established.
